How to use Tip Calculator

What this calculator does

This calculator helps you choose a tip and see the result immediately. You enter a bill amount, pick a tip percentage — from one-tap presets or a custom value — and the tool shows the tip amount, the total bill including the tip, and, if you are splitting, the amount each person pays. Everything recalculates the moment you change a value, and all of the maths runs locally in your browser.

The focus of this tool is the decision: trying a few percentages and watching the total move so you can settle on a figure you are comfortable with.

Why you might need it

Working out a tip in your head is awkward, especially after a meal or when the bill is an irregular amount. Different percentages produce surprisingly different totals, and it helps to see them rather than guess. You might be deciding between an 18% and a 20% tip, checking what a generous tip costs, or simply confirming the final amount before you pay. If a group is eating together, you also need a quick per-person figure. A calculator removes the mental arithmetic and the second-guessing.

How to use it

  1. Enter the bill amount — either the pre-tax subtotal or the full total, whichever you want to tip on.
  2. Choose the currency if it is not already correct.
  3. Pick a tip percentage from the preset buttons (10, 15, 18, 20, 25), or select Custom and type your own.
  4. Optionally set the number of people to split the bill between.
  5. Read the results: the tip amount is the headline figure, with the total bill and the per-person amount alongside. Copy the tip figure if you need it.

How it’s calculated

The tip is a percentage of the bill: tip = bill × (percentage ÷ 100). The total bill is then bill + tip. When you split between several people, the per-person amount is the total divided by the number of people, and the tool also breaks out how much of each share is tip. The number of people is treated as a whole number, and a value below one is treated as a single person so the result never divides by zero.

Common pitfalls

A common point of confusion is whether to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount; both are reasonable, so decide which you prefer and enter that figure. Another is expecting the total to be a round number — it usually will not be unless you adjust the percentage. When splitting, remember that dividing a total evenly can leave fractional currency amounts; rounding each share individually is what the dedicated Tip Splitter tool is for. Tipping norms also differ greatly between countries, so a percentage that is standard in one place may not be in another.

Tips

Use the preset buttons to compare percentages quickly — tap between 18% and 20% to see the cost of the difference. If you want a tidy total, switch to Custom and nudge the percentage until the total lands where you want it. For a group, set the number of people so everyone knows their share before the bill is settled. Because the tool is instant and private, you can experiment freely without anything you type leaving your device.

Frequently asked questions

What tip percentage should I choose?
Customary tips vary by country, venue and service. In many places 15–20% is typical for table service, with lower or no tipping elsewhere. This tool does not recommend a figure — it lets you try preset percentages and a custom value so you can see the total for whatever you decide is appropriate.
Is the tip calculated on the pre-tax or post-tax bill?
It is calculated on the bill amount you enter. If you want to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, enter that figure; if you prefer to tip on the total including tax, enter the full amount. The tool simply applies your chosen percentage to whatever you type.
How does splitting the bill work?
Enter the number of people and the calculator divides the total — bill plus tip — evenly among them, then also shows how much of each share is tip. Leave it at one person if you are not splitting.
What if I want a round total?
Switch the tip field to Custom and adjust the percentage until the total reaches a round figure. If you specifically want to split a bill with rounded per-person shares, the companion Tip Splitter tool has a round-up option built in.
Does this calculator store my bill amounts?
No. Everything runs in your browser with plain JavaScript. The bill, tip percentage and number of people you enter are never uploaded or saved on a server.
