How to use Millilitres to Ounces
What is a millilitre?
The millilitre (symbol ml, US spelling milliliter) is the SI unit
of liquid volume equal to one thousandth of a litre — 1 ml = 0.001 L
and 1 ml = 1 cm³ exactly. It is the everyday metric unit for
small-volume measurement: a teaspoon is about 5 ml, a tablespoon
about 15 ml, a standard wine glass pour around 150 ml, a soft-drink
can 330 ml, and a small water bottle 500 ml. Cooking, medical dosing,
chemistry, cosmetics, drinks and shipping labels all use the
millilitre across almost every country. Litres (1000 ml) and
centilitres (10 ml — used on European spirit labels) are its main
related units.
What is a US fluid ounce?
The US fluid ounce (symbol fl oz or US fl oz) is the customary
unit of liquid volume in the United States. Its modern definition is
exact: 1 US fl oz = exactly 29.5735295625 ml, derived from 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L and 128 fl oz per US gallon. Eight US fluid
ounces make one US cup, 16 make one US pint, 32 a US quart, 128 a US
gallon. The US fluid ounce is what you’ll see on US recipes, US
beverage cans (a typical soda is “12 fl oz”), US cocktail recipes
(“a 1.5 oz jigger”), and US packaged-liquid labels. The UK imperial
fluid ounce (28.4131 ml) is a different unit, slightly smaller — see
the FAQ for the dual-system caveat.
The conversion formula
US fluid ounces = millilitres ÷ 29.5735295625. The reverse is
multiplication by 29.5735295625. A worked example: a 500 ml water
bottle converts to 500 ÷ 29.5735295625 = 16.907 US fl oz. A 250 ml
coffee mug becomes 250 ÷ 29.5735295625 = 8.454 US fl oz. A 1 litre
bottle is 1000 ÷ 29.5735295625 = 33.814 US fl oz. Because the US
fluid ounce is defined by an exact ratio to the millilitre, the
conversion is mathematically precise; any rounding you see is purely
cosmetic truncation at the display step.
Common reference values
A handful of conversions worth memorising:
- 1 ml ≈ 0.0338 US fl oz — the building block.
- 5 ml ≈ 0.17 US fl oz — one teaspoon.
- 15 ml ≈ 0.51 US fl oz — one tablespoon.
- 30 ml ≈ 1.014 US fl oz — a “shot”; almost exactly 1 fl oz.
- 100 ml ≈ 3.38 US fl oz — TSA carry-on liquid limit.
- 236.588 ml = 8 US fl oz — one US cup.
- 250 ml ≈ 8.45 US fl oz — a metric cup.
- 355 ml ≈ 12 US fl oz — a US soda can.
- 500 ml ≈ 16.91 US fl oz — a small water bottle / pint.
- 1 000 ml ≈ 33.81 US fl oz — one litre.
The reference table on the page widens this list and updates live as you change the input value.
Searches arrive in different phrasings — “convert ml to oz” (the abbreviation), “convert ml to fluid ounces” (the full word, to disambiguate from weight ounces), and “convert millilitres to ounces” (the British millilitres spelling) — but they all map to the same arithmetic on this page. Whether you write milliliters (American) or millilitres (British), the SI unit is identical. A worked reference: 250 ml = 8.45 US fl oz (just over a US cup); 500 ml = 16.91 US fl oz (a small water bottle, very close to a US pint); 1 litre = 33.81 US fl oz.
Why people convert ml to oz
Cooking and baking. International recipes quote liquid ingredients in millilitres (250 ml milk, 60 ml oil); US recipes use fluid ounces and cups. Converting a metric recipe to fluid ounces lets a US baker use familiar measuring cups; the reverse helps a metric-country cook convert a US blog recipe to a measuring jug.
Cocktails and bartending. International bar guides specify pours in millilitres (30 ml gin, 15 ml lime juice); US guides use fluid ounces (1 oz gin, 0.5 oz lime). Many bartenders treat 30 ml as a shortcut for 1 fl oz — but the precise figure is 29.57 ml, a small difference that compounds across a six-ingredient drink.
Travel and cosmetics. Airport carry-on liquid limits are 100 ml internationally and 3.4 fl oz in the US — the same limit expressed two ways (3.4 fl oz × 29.5735 = 100.55 ml). Cosmetic and toiletry labels often list both; converting helps when buying online from a different market.
Medicine and dosing. Prescription liquid medicines are dosed in millilitres almost everywhere; US over-the-counter products sometimes show fluid ounces on the bottle label. Converting helps when reading dosing instructions across markets.
Beverages and packaging. US drink cans are 12 fl oz (355 ml); European cans are 330 ml (11.16 fl oz); UK cans are often 440 ml (14.88 fl oz). Converting helps compare serving sizes and nutrition labels across countries.
How to use this Millilitres to US fl oz converter
- Type your value in millilitres into the input box. Decimals work directly. The result in US fluid ounces updates as you type — no Convert button.
- The reference table below shows several common millilitre values and their fluid-ounce equivalents, rendered to the same precision as the live result.
- To go the other way (US fl oz → ml) tap Swap or open the dedicated US fl oz to Millilitres landing.
- Tap the copy icon next to the result to put the US fl oz value on your clipboard, ready to paste into a form or recipe.
- If your recipe is British or your label is imperial, use a UK fluid-ounce converter instead — the imperial fl oz is about 4 % smaller.
Privacy
The conversion is a single division — it runs locally on your device with no network call. There are no analytics on the numbers you type, no server-side logging, and the page works the same way offline once it has loaded. Confirm in your browser’s Network panel if you want; the only requests you’ll see are the one-time page load.
Compatibility notes
The math works in every browser ever made — it’s literally a single
division. Result formatting uses the modern Intl-based number
formatting that ships in every browser released since 2017, so very
large and very small results display in scientific notation rather
than as a wall of zeroes.
