How to use Ounces to Millilitres

What is a US fluid ounce?

The US fluid ounce (symbol fl oz or US fl oz) is the customary unit of liquid volume in the United States. Its modern definition is exact: 1 US fl oz = exactly 29.5735295625 ml, derived from 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L and 128 fl oz per US gallon. Eight US fluid ounces make one US cup, 16 make one US pint, 32 a US quart, 128 a US gallon. The US fluid ounce is what you’ll see on US recipes, US beverage cans (a typical soda is “12 fl oz”), US cocktail recipes (“a 1.5 oz jigger”), US bottled spirits (“a 750 ml fifth” is 25.36 fl oz), and US packaged-liquid labels. The UK imperial fluid ounce (28.4131 ml) is a different unit, slightly smaller — see the FAQ for the dual-system caveat.

What is a millilitre?

The millilitre (symbol ml, US spelling milliliter) is the SI unit of liquid volume equal to one thousandth of a litre — 1 ml = 0.001 L and 1 ml = 1 cm³ exactly. It is the everyday metric unit for small-volume measurement: a teaspoon is about 5 ml, a tablespoon about 15 ml, a standard wine glass pour around 150 ml, a soft-drink can 330 ml, and a small water bottle 500 ml. Cooking, medical dosing, chemistry, cosmetics, drinks and shipping labels all use the millilitre across almost every country. Litres (1000 ml) and centilitres (10 ml — used on European spirit labels) are its main related units.

The conversion formula

millilitres = US fluid ounces × 29.5735295625. The reverse is division by 29.5735295625. A worked example: a 12 fl oz US soda converts to 12 × 29.5735295625 = 354.882 ml, usually rounded to 355 ml on the can. A 1.5 fl oz cocktail pour becomes 1.5 × 29.5735295625 = 44.36 ml. A US gallon at 128 fl oz works out to 128 × 29.5735295625 = 3 785.41 ml, the exact 3.785411784 L definition. Because the US fluid ounce is defined by an exact ratio to the millilitre, the conversion is mathematically precise; any rounding you see is purely cosmetic truncation at the display step.

Common reference values

Why people convert oz to ml

Cooking and baking. US recipes quote liquid ingredients in fluid ounces and cups (1 cup milk, ½ cup oil); the rest of the world uses millilitres. Converting fl oz → ml lets a metric-country baker measure with a familiar jug. The eight-ounce cup is the unit that trips people up most often — see the cup FAQ above.

Cocktails and bartending. US bar guides specify pours in fluid ounces (1.5 oz gin, 0.75 oz lime juice); international bar guides use millilitres (45 ml, 22.5 ml). Converting gives a metric bartender exact pour weights without juggling jiggers. The “30 ml shot” shorthand is a rough US 1 fl oz — precisely it’s 29.57 ml.

Travel, cosmetics and TSA. US over-the-counter products sometimes label fluid ounces only; the TSA carry-on liquid limit is 3.4 fl oz, which is 100.55 ml — almost exactly the 100 ml international limit. Converting helps when packing across markets.

Medicine and dosing. US over-the-counter liquid medicines sometimes show fl oz; metric-country pharmacies and prescriptions work in ml. Converting helps when reading dosing instructions for an imported US product.

Beverages and packaging. A US 12 fl oz soda is 354.88 ml — almost the same as a European 330 ml can but not quite. A US 20 fl oz fountain drink is 591 ml. Converting helps make sense of US serving sizes on nutrition labels for an international audience.

How to use this US fl oz to Millilitres converter

  1. Type your value in US fluid ounces into the input box. Decimals work directly (e.g. 1.5 for a cocktail pour). The result in millilitres updates as you type — no Convert button.
  2. The reference table below shows several common fluid-ounce values and their millilitre equivalents, rendered to the same precision as the live result.
  3. To go the other way (ml → US fl oz) tap Swap or open the dedicated Millilitres to US fl oz landing.
  4. Tap the copy icon next to the result to put the millilitres value on your clipboard, ready to paste into a recipe or form.
  5. If your source recipe is British or your bottle label is imperial, use a UK fluid-ounce converter instead — the imperial fl oz is about 4 % smaller (28.41 ml vs 29.57 ml).

Privacy

The conversion is a single multiplication — it runs locally on your device with no network call. There are no analytics on the numbers you type, no server-side logging, and the page works the same way offline once it has loaded. Confirm in your browser’s Network panel if you want; the only requests you’ll see are the one-time page load.

Compatibility notes

The math works in every browser ever made — it’s literally a single multiplication. Result formatting uses the modern Intl-based number formatting that ships in every browser released since 2017, so very large and very small results display in scientific notation rather than as a wall of zeroes.

Frequently asked questions

How is 1 US fluid ounce converted to millilitres?
This converter uses the US customary fluid ounce: 1 US fl oz = exactly 29.5735295625 ml, derived from 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L and 128 fl oz per gallon. The converter multiplies your input fluid ounces by 29.5735295625 and shows the result with enough decimal places to be useful. Because 29.5735295625 ml is an exact defined value (not a rounded approximation), the conversion is mathematically precise to the full precision JavaScript can store.
What about UK / imperial fluid ounces?
The UK imperial fluid ounce is different — 1 UK fl oz ≈ 28.4131 ml. So 8 imperial fl oz is about 227.3 ml, but 8 US fl oz is 236.6 ml. This converter outputs from US fluid ounces by default because the bulk of online recipes, beverage cans and product specs that use 'fl oz' are American. If your recipe is British or your spirits bottle is labelled in imperial measures, use a UK fluid-ounce converter — the difference is about 4 %, enough to matter for cocktails and baking.
How many US fluid ounces are in a millilitre?
About 0.0338 US fl oz. The reverse direction (ml → US fl oz) divides by 29.5735295625. So 30 ml ≈ 1.014 US fl oz; 100 ml ≈ 3.381 US fl oz; 500 ml ≈ 16.907 US fl oz; 1 000 ml (1 L) ≈ 33.814 US fl oz. Tap Swap on the page to flip direction.
How big is a US cup, in millilitres?
1 US cup = 8 US fl oz = 236.588 ml. This is the cup most US recipes mean. Two other cup definitions appear in cooking: the metric cup is 250 ml (used in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and many European cookbooks), and the legal US cup used in nutrition labelling is 240 ml. So when a US recipe says '1 cup of milk', metric-country bakers should pour 237 ml, not 250 ml — though for non-baking recipes the difference is rarely critical.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion is a single arithmetic operation in JavaScript on your device — there is no server call, no logging, no analytics on the values you enter. You can confirm in the browser's Network tab, or switch off Wi-Fi after loading the page; the converter keeps working.
