How to use Truth or Dare

What this tool does

This is a family-friendly version of the classic party game Truth or Dare. A player picks Truth or Dare, and the tool shows a random prompt — a light question to answer honestly, or a harmless, silly challenge to perform. Tap again for a different one. Every prompt has been written from scratch to be wholesome: the truths are gentle and positive, and the dares are playful performances and impressions, never anything embarrassing or risky.

A Gentle / Bolder toggle lets you match the energy of the group. Gentle keeps things calm and simple, ideal for younger players or a quiet evening. Bolder mixes in livelier prompts — longer performances, sillier challenges, more thoughtful questions — while staying just as appropriate.

When you would use it

Truth or Dare is a reliable way to lift the mood of a gathering. It works at family game nights, sleepovers, classroom break times, youth groups, holiday get-togethers and any moment when a group has a few minutes and wants to laugh together. Because everything here is family-friendly, you can hand it round a mixed-age group without screening the prompts first.

It is also handy for breaking the ice. The truths gently encourage people to share favourites, memories and small hopes — a low-pressure way for a new group to get to know each other. The dares get everyone moving and laughing, which loosens up even the shyest room. Teachers and group leaders often use a couple of rounds as a warm-up before the main activity.

How to use it

  1. Pick a prompt level — Gentle for the calmest prompts, Bolder for a bit more energy.
  2. Optionally add player names so the tool can track whose turn it is.
  3. The current player presses Truth or Dare.
  4. Read the prompt aloud and answer or perform it.
  5. Press Another truth or Another dare if you would like a different prompt instead.
  6. Press Pass to next player to move the turn along to the next name.

Tips for a good game

Agree two simple ground rules before you start: anyone may skip a prompt they are not comfortable with, and dares stay kind — no prompt should ever be aimed at making someone feel small. Even though every bundled prompt is gentle, setting that tone keeps the game welcoming for everyone.

Keep turns moving. If a player hesitates for too long, offer them the other option or draw a fresh prompt rather than letting the energy drop. With a larger group, the player list keeps things fair so nobody is skipped and nobody is picked on twice in a row. For the youngest players, stay on the Gentle level and read prompts aloud together.

If you want more group games in the same spirit, try Would You Rather for tricky either/or dilemmas and This or That for fast-fire favourites. To choose who goes first, the coin flipper, dice roller and decision wheel all give a fair, random pick.

Privacy

The whole game runs in your browser. Every truth and dare is bundled into the page, the random choice is made on your device, and any player names you add stay inside the tab — they are never uploaded, logged or saved between visits. There is no account and no tracking. Close the page and the player list is cleared, and the tool keeps working even with no internet connection.

Frequently asked questions

Are all the prompts family-friendly?
Yes. Every truth and every dare in this tool is written to be wholesome and suitable for all ages and mixed groups. There is nothing embarrassing, unkind or risky. The two levels — Gentle and Bolder — only change how playful a prompt is, not how appropriate it is. Bolder still means a harmless impression or a silly performance, never anything uncomfortable.
What is the difference between the Gentle and Bolder levels?
Gentle prompts are the simplest and calmest — great for the youngest players or a relaxed setting. Bolder prompts are a bit more lively: a longer performance, a sillier challenge, a more reflective question. Bolder draws from the whole pool, including the gentle prompts, so it is varied; Gentle stays strictly within the calmest set.
How does the player list and 'pass to next player' work?
Adding names is optional. If you add players, the tool highlights whose turn it is and 'Pass to next player' moves the highlight along and clears the prompt so the next person starts fresh. It is just a turn-tracker — the tool does not pick prompts for specific people. The list is held in the page only and is not saved.
Is anything I type saved or sent anywhere?
No. The player names you add stay inside the browser tab and are never uploaded or stored. There is no server, no account and no tracking. The whole prompt set is bundled into the page, and closing the tab clears the player list. The tool works fully offline once it has loaded.
